ABOUT THE BOOK
UNION PACIFIC STEAM-EASTERN DISTRICT is a consolidation of three books previously produced by James L. Ehernberger and Francis G. Gschwind: SMOKE ACROSS THE PRAIRIE (Nebraska Division), SMOKE OVER THE DIVIDE (Wyoming Division, and SMOKE ABOVE THE PLAINS (Kansas Division) covering approximately the final twenty-five years of the steam locomotive era on the Union Pacific Railroad in Nebraska, Wyoming, Kansas, northeastern Colorado and eastern Utah. In answer to numerous requests to reprint these three out-of-print books in the "Smoke Series," and in order to reduce publishing costs, E. & G. Publications decided upon a consolidated version of the trio, thereby representing the Eastern District of the railroad under one cover. The combined volume is a result of special arrangements with the Intermountain Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society, publishers of the first edition of SMOKE ACROSS THE PRAIRIE. The original versions of all three publications have been reproduced in their entirety, unrevised except for a few minor changes and corrections which have effected an improvement over the original editions.
However, in Mr. Kenefick's commentary in the front pages of SMOKE ACROSS THE PRAIRIE, the reader will note a reference to a pictorial supplement covering the period of transition to diesel-electric motive power. This supplement, carried in the single reprint editions of the book, produced by the Intermountain Chapter, has not been included in UNION PACIFIC STEAM-EASTERN DISTRICT, in order to adhere to the all-steam content of the original editions of all three publications.
