Big Boy locomotives of the Union Pacific Railroad were, without a doubt, the locomotive most favored by aficionados the world over. In addition to being the world's largest steam locomotive, no doubt they brought more steam fans and cameras to Sherman Hill in the 1950 era than any other locomotive. We are fortunate that almost one-third of the class have been preserved and are displayed at various locations in the United States.
While other books have been published regarding these locomotives, none had ever shown views of every Big Boy taken on both the right and left sides to enable a model railroader to obtain details useful for their hobby. Another goal the authors have attempted was to point out changes and included views from different angles. This goal has been to try to include as many views as possible of facilities which were associated with steam operations.
Since steam operations continued into the summer of 1959 on Sherman Hill, naturally that segment of trackage between Cheyenne and Laramie is covered in greater detail. A survey conducted of U.R enthusiasts has indicated a large interest in this territory as well.
Railroad photographers often times attempt to get a close view of the locomotive, preferably with no background, resulting in a true portrait of a locomotive. Our book features the works of many photographers, and while preparing this book a certain criteria was followed, especially:
1. ...Selecting mostly unpublished photographs.
2. ...Photographs which adequately represent the class of the locomotive.
3. ...Quality which must appeal to a wide variety of readers, from the model railroaders to those who may desire to place this volume on a coffee table; and
4. ...Accuracy of data for both the photograph and locomotive.
