INTRODUCTION
My interest in observing and recording activity along the Stromsburg branch has been almost lifelong. Living near the tracks in Shelby until age 14 afforded the good fortune of being able to see or hear the passing of the trains almost daily. My family then moved a few blocks away to my present home location, where from a distance I could still see the tracks.
At about the time of our move, I started delivering both morning and evening editions of the Omaha World-Herald. The papers were brought in on the motor train. I would be waiting at the depot before and after school for their arrival. Often, the steam-powered local freight would also be there, waiting for a meet with the motor. This all tied-in very well with my budding railroad interest.
Most often, change is gradual and little-noticed until looking back. For that reason I missed many good, perhaps rare, photo opportunities on the branch. This was especially true during the late 1940-early 1950 period when the steam era was closing and diesel power arrived on the scene.
The enjoyable past time spent away from my regular, non-railroad occupation would not have been possible without the friendliness and close association over the years of many fine Union Pacific employees. A belated thanks to A.H. (Al) Gutz, retired Shelby depot agent, who was helpful in many ways.
Final recognition is reserved for my mother, Camille. Her early railroad heritage with the Rock Island Line is what must have instilled a railroad interest in me so young in life. She never seemed to mind the inconvenience of fixing early or late meals in order to accommodate a son's train-photographing schedule. My friends in the hobby were her friends also. For that and more 1 shall be forever grateful.
