This book covers the history and operation of the Boise, Nampa & Owyhee Railway, which ran from Nampa south to Murphy in Idaho. Built for the Owyhee mines in southwestern Idaho at the turn of the century, the line never reached the mines, which closed soon after the line was completed. The rail line, which was absorbed into the Union Pacific after it was completed, was abandoned in sections after World War II, and today there are only reminders of this line, including the Guffey Bridge across the Snake River. There are chapters giving the background behind the construction of the railroad, building the line, the operations of the railway, the abandonment of the rail line, the famous Sheep Wreck, and the well-known Guffey Bridge. The history of the line is told by Thornton Waite, who has also written Yellowstone Branch of the Union Pacific and Union Pacific: Montana Division.
Thornton has also written numerous other articles on the history and operations of railroads, and is particularly interested in the history of railroads in Idaho. He is a project manager of Bechtel B & W Idaho at the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory, and lives in Idaho Falls, Idaho, with his wife, two daughters, dog and two cats.
