DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION:
Beginning in the late 1930s, the Union Pacific Railroad commissioned skilled photographers to capture important moments in the road's development within the new medium of color film. Used once or twice on long-forgotten calendars or annual reports, these classic scenes were stored for years in the Union Pacific Museum in Omaha before being restored to their full lustre within the pages of this book. The UP's famous two-tone gray steam locomotives, montrous "Big Boys" and "Challengers," Armour yellow "Streamliners," early diesels and gas turbines were posed throughout the multi-hued trackside landscapes between the years 1938 and 1958 examined in this first volume. Contained herein are events, places and people which the average railfan never saw for himself: shopmen overhauling steam power, engine crews on duty, the arrival of brand new steam locomotives, diesels and "Streamliners." This collection of photos and text presents an intimate glimpse of the smoke and grease and sweat and paint of a great railroad at work.
