Another new magazine? Well, yes and no.
You may recognize the names and the authors of this publication from other magazines and books about the Union Pacific Railroad. The authors all share a great enthusiasm for the Union Pacific and are dedicated model railroaders. It was natural that we decided to fill the need for a publication devoted to modeling the Union Pacific railroad and its equipment. So, we're back!
Union Pacific Modeler will appeal to those who share our interests, including locomotives, rolling stock, structures, train consists, track layouts and more. The content of this first issue is an attempt to satisfy the interests of readers in a broad range of subjects. We solicit your input on additional subjects that you would like to know more about.
Like a book, Union Pacific Modeler will be published annually, but like a magazine, the articles will probe subjects from a modelers perspective. We plan on having articles that average 12-14 pages and will include many photos. This provides modelers with all the information they need to build a model to whatever level of detail they choose.
Unlike commercial magazines, we will have the luxury of including very detailed information including extensive tables and diagrams on many different subjects in each issue. Also unlike commercial magazines, we will not include advertising.
Article ideas largely come from Associate editor Bill Metzger; his experience as proprietor of Evergreen Roundhouse is invaluable. His customers ask specific questions like "which cars ran on the City of San Francisco in the mid fifties?" or "which locomotives ran on the Rawlins to Laramie subdivision in 1937?". We can't answer all the questions but some of them will continue to direct our research. We do not pretend to be experts on any Union Pacific subject but we do know where to find a lot of answers.
Union Pacific modelers are blessed with access to the railroad's history through the Union Pacific Museum in Omaha. Museum director Don Snoddy and Ken Longe, Public Relations Specialist, have been helpful in our research, and we express our gratitude to them for their contributions.
