About This Book
The motive power fleet of the Union Pacific Railroad has become very diversified since the mergers of Chicago & North Western in 1995 and Southern Pacific (including Cotton Belt and Denver & Rio Grande Western in 1996. An observer at trackside today can only find the great variety of yellow and gray (and yellow and green, gray and scarlet. and black and orange) locomotives to be confusing, at best. This directory intends to help remove that confusion.
This listing of Union Pacific locomotives is current as of December 31, 1998, showing a motive power fleet of 6,929 locomotives. Included are all known renumberings and retirements. Not included in this total are the eight remaining former C&NW units that were not assigned UP numbers (of 144 units at merger); 209 remaining former SP units not assigned UP numbers (of 293 units at merger); and four remaining former D&RGW units not assigned UP numbers (of 30 units at merger). These units are shown in the appendices. Also in the appendices are cross-reference listings of former C&NW, D&RGW, and SP/SSW units, and their assigned UP numbers.
In early September 1997, UPcompleted its locomotive fleet numbering plan, which fully integrates the diversity of three railroads into a single fleet. To do so requires the renumbering of several of UP's existing locomotives. In this book, in addition to showing the new UP numbers assigned to former C&NW, former SP/ SSW, and former D&RGW locomotives, some UP locomotives are shown twice, as a group of current numbers, and as a group of assigned numbers. This duplication is meant to account for locomotives that will be renumbered throughout 1999 and following years.
What do the parentheses () mean?
Listings with road numbers in parentheses denote that the number has been assigned. but the locomotive has not yet been renumbered.
