INTRODUCTION
Since that fateful day, thirteen years ago, when I met my husband, Stephen, who took me on a railfanning trip, I have been hooked on trains. I found fascination in motive power, the differences in shapes, sounds and paint 1 schemes that adorned these giant machines. I have a greater appreciation for how many of the products I use on a daily basis (electricity, fresh fruit and the vehicle I drive) are brought to me via" the railroad. In fact, it was the railroad that brought the industrial revolution to this country and expanded our possibilities and dreams.
Union Pacific has played a significant role in the history of the United States of America. Employing thousands of people to build their railroad westward out of Omaha, Nebraska, the Union Pacific expanded possibilities for many entrepreneurs, farmers and families alike. Union Pacific also played a strong role in the development of new -motive power. Working together with ALCO/GE, the turbines were" brought to fruition. Embarking on a turbocharging project of their own, the Union Pacific influenced Electro-Motive ' s decision to offer turbocharged 4-axle power.
While not my first love, the Union -Pacific's presence in this country .; cannot be ignored. Mergers - and acquisitions have placed this railroad at the top of the industry, in both revenue and territorial miles. I do not purport to be an expert on Union Pacific motive power or history. My purpose for these volumes was to simply give a thorough representation in both written and visual media, that which was and is The Union
Pacific Diesel.
