This brief look at the Union Pacific Railroad DDA40X, or "Centennial," diesel-electric locomotive is a starting point for anyone who seeks specific information on one or more of the surviving examples of a locomotive type that appeals to the marvel factor in each of us. Most often, this fascination is sparked when the claim of "world's largest and most powerful diesel-electric locomotive" is wrapped around its long body frame.
The majority of images herein were primarily taken in the vicinity of the historic UP terminal of Cheyenne, Wyo. A few other geographic locations on the widespread UP system are also represented. It's hoped this review of the 6900s that have survived since their service finale in 1985 will be of mutual reader interest; to those who witnessed and/or photographed these iron giants in their days of service, and to those who have only known the majority of survivors as static museum pieces.
