Union Pacific A Decade of Transition By Wayne Monger Soft Cover 1996 UP

Union Pacific A Decade of Transition By Wayne Monger Soft Cover 1996 by the publishers of Pacific Rail News 64 pages.  Many photos.
When conceived in late 1993, this project was to have been a representative photo collection of the Union Pacific Railroad's operations during the first half of the 1990s. It has gone far beyond that concept, thanks largely to the contributions of 84 photographers who sent in a total of 1,646 photos for consideration.
What is presented within these pages is a snapshot of the UP during the era when UP became the most dominant railroad in North America. It illustrates the UP in that short span of time when there were still four major Western railroads competing with each other; between the final assimilation of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas into the UP operating scheme, through the final "redeployment" of roughly 5,700 miles of branch lines; the expenditure of hundreds of millions of dollars on new track and new equipment; up to the bidding war with rival Burlington Northern for the Santa Fe. Here is the UP at a time when the Chicago & North Western was still its primary interchange partner, and the Southern Pacific was little more than a rival parallel railroad. In essence, this is an instant history book for today's and tomorrow's readers. Enjoy!
