Chapel, Honorary chief Engineer From the S.N.C.F. with 283 figures Introduction a century of material and TRACTION on the ORLEANS Network 1 steam locomotives.
The study of the engine and towed material of the company of Orl, from the origins up to the present day, arouses a keen interest because of its very wide variety, an obvious symbol of progress and research of the best. More considerable variety than in many other railway networks whether they are French or foreign.
This prodigious evolution of the material of one of our largest networks, has often led, at different times, to the forefront of technical progress, because the company of Orl, as a financial entity, has always been able to surround itself with valuable technicians.
Progress can be measured when the Pacific compound machines, modified in 1929-1934 by Mr. Chapeln, were consumed at 100 t/km, 6 to 7 times less fuel, at a walking speed three times higher than the 1840 locomotives.
Apart from the time of the inevitable tof the beginning, this evolution of the material has been punctuated by periods of uneven length which have marked it each of a deeper footprint or moms.
The materials conceived during some of these periods were sometimes such a progress, that not only did they perform in excellent conditions the service for which they were studied, but in addition, they had a telie longevity, that it is Almost without example in the railway industry seeming to demonstrate the correctness of the views having presided design.
This evolution of the material and traction of the Orleans network has unfortunately, as elsewhere, been delayed, modified or even oriented in an unexpected sense by political and financial events, or subjected to various military vicissitudes or Other.
The P.O. 's locomotives were, at different times, imitated,
