Introduction
MOST PEOPLE who have been associated with railroads, especially historians, railfans and folk from the Rocky Mountain region, have heard the Uintah Railway name. Famous because of two of the largest narrow-gauge locomotives ever built, as well as for the legendary 7.5-percent grade up Baxter Pass, the unique name of this railway 'is still recognized 60 years after its demise in 1939. This publication has been designed to provide as detailed a look into the past as possible, via as many photographs as could be found. This garnering of images, both from my personal collection, as well as from many generous people who have loaned their pictures for use in the book, has grown to such an extent that one volume could not contain everything that has been discovered about this railway and the small towns it created.
Volume I of the UINTAH RAILWAY PICTORIAL follows the right-of-way of the railway, as it stretched out to the north of Mack, Colorado. First crossing a nearly barren desert, and then entering the rugged canyons of the Bookcliff Range, the Uintah stopped at the small coal-mining settlement of Carbonera and then continued on up the canyon to Atchee, Color do. At Atchee, most of the railway's activity happened on a daily basis, as this small town was Used as a main division point and engine-servicing facility for the entire line. It is the history in photographs of this section of the line that this volume hopefully will bring to light.
