This book was more than 14 years in the making, and not just because it required considerable research.

It was in 1970 that I first thought about capturing the essence of the Twin City Rapid Transit Company on paper, but instead decided to write a book on the Chicago Surface Lines first. That book Chicago Surface Lines: An Illustrated History is now in its Third Edition and a best seller among books on street railways, with 10,000 copies of the various editions and the supplement now in print.
