INTRODUCTION
The Southern Railway branch line from Plymouth to Turnchapel was only 21/2 miles long, and when I began to write a history of the line, I thought that only a very small book would result, even if I included the goods line known as the Cattewater Branch, with which the Turnchapel Branch was intimately connected, because of their geographic positions. However, it is surprising how much information is still available about such small branch lines as these, which formed such a complex network over the country during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and which are in their way just as much a part of railway history as the more famous, larger lines.
The Turnchapel Branch had a history of only 64 years, but the portion of the line from Plymouth Friary to Plymstock and the Cattewater Branch are still open to goods traffic, totaling 89 years to date. Neither line had any great claim to scenic beauty, but their existence altered for all time the face of that part of the estuary of the River Plym which is known as Cattewater. Industry flourished on the western bank of the estuary, where the Cattewater Branch ran, whilst on the eastern bank the two villages of Turnchapel and Oreston developed to such an extent that they are now suburbs of the City of Plymouth. At the turn of the century these two villages were served by rail and sea, but by the early 1920s they were also served by road transport. By the late 1960s, only the road transport remained and now, with the railway closed and the steamers gone, only the number 7 bus route of the 'Plymouth Joint Services' remains.
The transport by rail of cement and liquid petroleum gas still sustains the Friary to Plymstock section, while oil and bitumen are the main goods carried on the Cattewater Branch. During these uncertain days of recession, one may only speculate as to the probability of their survival into the 1990s.
