EARLY SARNIA
As described in the Grand Trunk Railway Gazetteer 1889
"A station on the Sarnia branch and an incorporated town beautifully situated on the St. Clair River in the township of Sarnia, county of Lambton, of which it is the county town.
Connections here are made with the C & GRRY and Flint & D Ry By ferry to Port Huron. It contains banks, 8 churches, 4 Public and High Schools, CPR & GNW, telegraph, telephone and express companies have offices here.
Street cars to Point Edward, two miles north. Daily stages to Corunna, Courtwright, Moore, Sombra, Pt. Lambton, and Wallaceburg. Steamboats for all Points on the Great Lakes call here. Population is about 7,600."
This small but bustling community was about to embark on one of the biggest engineering projects in the world. Its story is the subject of this book.
An illustrated history of the building of the St. Clair Rail Tunnel that runs between Sarnia, Ontario and Port Huron, Michigan. This was the first international underwater rail tunnel in the world when it was built in 1891. Many photos, diagrams and stories of the builders are included in "Tunnel Tales".
