A DEAFENING crash of thunder heralded the arrival of the train at Boxfield Station.

The thread of his reflections was broken, and his hopes of privacy were dashed to the ground by the opening of the door. But the intrusion was in some measure atoned for by the appearance of the intruder.
The girl who entered was young and undeniably pretty. Her eyes were as bright as the diamonds that reposed in Mr. Hyde's pocket, and he had seldom seen rubies to equal the beauty of the parted lips that revealed two rows of pearl-like teeth. Naturally, Mr. Hyde thought in terms of precious stones.
