As was the case in most areas, the trolley lines of Delaware County, Pennsylvania were built under the names of a multitude of small companies. The companies fall generally into two categories - those which were actual operating properties and those which were &may corporations controlled by one of the operators. Again, as was the normal pattern, the various operators came to be consolidated into large regional groupings. In Delaware County, there were four such groupings. However, the pattern differs from normal in that one of the four, because of its location, corporate affiliations and financial problems was under control of one of the other combines during most of its existence. In addition, it represented a loose alliance rather than a formal consolidation of lines.
The four groups of lines are as follows:
SOUTHERN PENNSYLVANIA TRACTION COMPANY
This group included most of the lines in Chester, all of the lines between Chester and the Delaware state border, and lines between Chester and Media, Chester and Derby, Media and Glen Riddle and Media and Angora. This was the largest of the systems based in the county. It was originally an outgrowth of the local system in Chester, the Chester Traction Co., and included one other initially independent operator, the Delaware County and Philadelphia. During most of its existence it was part of a corporate structure which included the street railways of Wilmington, Delaware. This book will discuss the Delaware County portions of this operation in the first section. Reference to the Wilmington system will be made only where necessary to clarify the operations in Pennsylvania.
MEDIA, MIDDLETOWN, ASTON AND CHESTER ELEC.
K. CO. This included lines of the company named and the Philadelphia, Morton and Swarthmore St. By. Co. The lines were merged to form the Darby, Media and Chester St. By. Co. in 1906 and promptly leased to the Philadelphia Rapid Transit Co. which operated the system as a virtually separate entity until the discontinuance of street car service. The lines were centered at Folsom and ran from that point to Derby, Media and Chester. In addition a line ran from Derby to Yeadon and from Media to Chester. These lines are discussed in detail in the third section of this book. Because of the close association of this group with the P R T, those lines of P R T which are properly city lines of Philadelphia but which cross the county border to Derby are mentioned in this section.
RED ARROW LINES this group of lines is made up of lines which came to be known as the Philadelphia Suburban Transportation Co. and which are currently being absorbed into the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority. The lines radiated from the 69th St. Elevated Terminal in Upper Derby. Trolley lines originally ran to West Chester, Ardmore, and Media. In addition, the third rail line from 69th St. to Norristown has been in this family during the greater part of its existence. Except for the P R T lines into Derby, the Media, Sharon Hill and Norristown lines are the last electric lines in the county. A brief discussion of this property has been added to complete the coverage of the book but, because the system is a continuing one and an official history of the period of private operation is in the process of preparation, no effort has been made for a complete story of this property.
THE SOUTHWESTERN DIVISION this group of lines represents the remnants. The company for which it is named operated chiefly inside the city of Philadelphia but we have included in this group the Chester and Philadelphia which was operated in conjunction with this company during much of its existence and the Chester Short Line. This group of lines was originally within the sphere of influence of the Chester Traction Company and later within that of P B T. Because of the varying associations, it has been decided to treat this group separately.
