Triumph Volume 5
For over two centuries, the Holy Grail of transportation, commerce, finance and raw power has been New York City. Indeed, at this very moment in history, there is no other candidate in the world that can even be described as a credible contender for the crown.
John Edgar Thomson, the true creator of PRR (see Triumphs I and IV), grew tired of turning over and receiving New York traffic with the Philadelphia and Reading at Harrisburg and, wanting the "whole haul," punched his way first into Philadelphia (see Triumphs II and III) and then moved north into the Big Apple, a dramatic story told in this volume.
Thus Thomson was the Father of what became known as the New York Division.
It fell to Alexander Cassatt in the early 20th Century to create the structure necessary to contend, against rival New York Central and other lesser railroads, for dominance in New York and thus became the Son of the New York Division, another great adventure story told in these pages.
