The Middle Division. Its very name suggests that it was located between two other entities - in this case the more populous Philadelphia Division to the east and the mountainous Pittsburgh Division to the west. Both of these divisions were arguably better known than their connecting colleague.
But if the Middle Division was the least known of the three and served mainly to connect the other two, what did it have to offer in its own right? First and foremost, and we sometimes lose sight of this fact, it was where the Pennsylvania Railroad began. Although initially led - and we hasten to add, financed - by Philadelphia mercantile interests in their attempt to compete with New York City and Baltimore for traffic from the West, the railroad actually began in Harrisburg (see Triumph II) and proceeded stalwartly and resolutely westward.
To reach its destination, Pittsburgh, it first had to cross the formidable Allegheny Mountain Barrier (see Triumph I). As we cross the mountains today via rail or road, we admire the scenery, but otherwise take them largely for granted. In its day, however, building the railroad was a major engineering accomplishment through largely unsettled wilderness.
