It became readily apparent when beginning work on Triumph II, the previous volume in this series (covering the PRR Philadelphia Division), that the Philadelphia Terminal Division warranted a volume by itself to do it justice. If the Philadelphia Division has a dual personality i.e. separate lines that predominantly handle passenger and freight traffic, the Philadelphia Terminal Division has a personality that is both diverse and complex. It encompasses four-track mains that simultaneously handle through freights, crack passenger trains and local commuter runs - city terminals with a history that could easily become a volume unto itself - numerous yards and short branches serving industrial sidings - in-the-street trackage serving various port facilities - and finally the single-track line that threaded its way up the Schuylkill Valley to iron and steel plants and remote anthracite fields far from the bustle of Philadelphia.
