One of the difficulties in attempting to tell the story of "The Standard Railroad of the World" is deciding how to divide it up into manageable sections. PRR used East and West, and then divisions, regions and zones, and shuffled those around a bit over the years. For convenience, the Triumph series has tried to follow divisional segments.
This volume covers the epic struggle between canal and railroad forces in Pennsylvania to provide a solution to claiming the prize of traffic from the midwest, the formation and construction of the Philadelphia & Columbia up to its purchase by PRR, the east-west mainline from Paoli to Harrisburg and Rockville Bridge and the Trenton Cutoff from just east of Langhorne, PA through its junction with the Philadelphia & Thorndale connecting with the Low-Grade Line to Enola Yard. Although the Triumph series is primarily about the mainline, we have given the Columbia Branch a reasonable amount of attention because of its historical and operational importance in the Philadelphia Division. Also touched on are the West Chester, Coatesville, New Holland and Quarryville Branches.
