PREFACE
It was the year 1910. On May 6, Toronto's 425,000 citizens learned of the death of King Edward and the ascension to the throne of his popular son George, Duke of York. Later that same month Torontonians were supplied for the first time with chlorinated water. Out at Trethewey Farm, eight miles northwest of the city, Count Jacques de Lesseps was giving a demonstration of his flying skills. Signs of progress were in the air.
Buried on the back pages of the local dailies that June was a brief mention of the launching of a new steam ferry for the Toronto Ferry Company. Christened Trillium, this double-end, side-paddle Island ferry cruised the waters of Toronto Bay for nearly fifty years. Retired in 1956 the historic old craft was saved from the scrapyard when a rescue plan proposed in 1973 culminated in her return to Toronto in 1976 as a fully operational steam ferry.
The following pages trace the history of passenger travel to Toronto Island, early life on the Island, and the rise, fall and rebirth of the most popular Island ferry boat of all, the Trillium.
