In the July, 1983 issue of Transportation Quarterly, Charlotte Munger, Secretary and Treasurer of the Eno Foundation, identified a new objective of the Foundation-to join the "computer revolution."

At its October quarterly meeting, the Board approved the purchase of a computer terminal and operating system for the Foundation's office. Initially, the system will be used as an aid in distributing the Quarterly. The existing laborious, antiquated method of mailing the Quarterly has ended with this issue. Beginning with the April, 1984 issue, the Quarterly mailing list will be computerized, and the journal will be mailed directly from our printer, Science Press, Inc., located in Ephrata, Pennsylvania.

Concurrent with this change, the Foundation's staff will begin using computer-assisted word processing to accelerate editing and production of the quarterly, as well as future monographs published by the Eno Foundation. Computer assistance has already played a larger role in the development of the Foundation's just released book: Where's Main Street, USA? The Foundation's new in-house computer capabilities will be called on for even more assistance with other Eno titles scheduled to be released during 1984: Intermodal Movement of Cargo; Urban Transportation Administration; and Parking.

With respect to using the computer, the Foundation's staff is first learning to walk before they can run. Our staff is involved in a continuing program of training in order to become familiar with its use and applications. In time, the computer's assistance possibilities will enable the Foundation to have a very powerful and useful tool.

Our long-range objectives will undoubtedly utilize our newly emerging capabilities to a much greater extent. We will be using the computer in updating and cataloging our reference library, compiling indexes of Quarterly articles, and to assist in record keeping and accounting. We are excited about the possibilities offered now and for the future, and look forward to providing the services of the Foundation in a more efficient and timely manner.
