JUST 75 years ago this week the morning quiet of Middletown wasbroken by the shriek of a strange whistle coming from the direction ofPortland and it occasioned no little excitement when citizens learned thatthe sound heralded the approach of the first train to come through from Willimantic on the once-famed Air Line Railroad.
Link to Big Towns
IT MEANT much to the citizens of day when the horse was here to stay and the automobile had not yet made its appearance. It meant that Middlewas now connected with Boston and New York, and way stations, by rail. It meant that Middletown and the other towns between New Haven and Willimantic were now really on the map.
For a time the road prospered. Some fast trains once operated over its rails, notably the "Ghost Train" which left New York and Boston at 3 p. m. each afternoon, arriving at the opposite terminals at 9 p. m. Later the "Air Line Limited" made the trip in five hours-not much behind today's best time by rail between the two cities.
But the almost gradeless Shore Line route was favored over the shorter but hillier "Air Line" route and passenger service dwindled until today there is nothing but freight over the "Air Line."
