JUST about 16 years ago, the first railway museum was founded to preserve one antique streetcar in operating condition. Although there had been previous attempts by railfans to save miscellaneous equipment, and a number of railroads and civic groups had kept historic locomotives for display, this was the first time that an organization had been formed specifically to preserve railway equipment.
Today this pioneer group has been joined by numerous others in this country and abroad, and the pieces of rolling stock number in the hundreds. Electric cars have received the bulk of the attention to date, because their demise began sooner and the problems of preserving them were at least slightly less colossal than those posed by steam locomotives.
Communication between the organizations has always been poor, often because the problems of gathering and caring for a collection of this sort left little time for correspondence. In 1953, several of the organizations felt the time had come for more effective exchange of information and assistance, and formed the Conference of Railway Museum Sponsors.
Time and space limitations, plus the problems of gathering information, have forced us to limit the scope of this guide primarily to electric railway museums in the United States, Canada, and the British Isles. Possibly future editions can carry information on steam and more overseas museums if there is sufficient interest to justify doing so.
Listings are in general geographical order, with a brief illustrated description of each project, including information on hours open, membership, and name, title and address of the person from whom additional information may be obtained, plus a complete roster of the electric cars in each collection.
