INTRODUCTION
THERE WEREN'T many interurbans in New England during the heyday of the electric railway, but notable among the few was the Boston & Worcester Street Railway, popularly known as the "Trolley Air Line." This 50-mile road provided a direct connection between the two largest cities of Massachusetts for nearly 30 years and offered fast and frequent service to the villages and towns along its double track main line and on its several branches.
The year 1953 was the golden anniversary of the opening of the Boston & Worcester and there was no more appropriate time to obtain a complete report on the history and development of this colorful system which played so important a role in the growth of the large suburbs to the west of Boston.
The first part of this narrative is devoted to a discussion of the early street railway facilities in the area later served by the Boston & Worcester. Second and finally comes the story of the Boston & Worcester itself, from the filing of its articles of association in 1899 to its complete motorization in 1932. Detailed attention is given to such items as corp irate structure, track and roadway, plant and structures, rolling stock, passenger and freight operaions, proposed extensions and the advent of the motor bus.
An extensive use of tables and maps is made, and a roster of equipment is presented in a new and different style, listing cars by type and class rather than in numerical order. This permits full information to be included in the body matter of the roster rather than in supplementary notes.
Over two decades have gone since the last trolley ran from Boston to Worcester. Highway buses now serve the route, but the street railway days are still well remembered by many. It is the purpose of this history to refresh and preserve those memories through the media of pictures and the printed word.
