The Association was founded in 1959 as a non-profit educational and historical organization with the specific intents of preserving transit history and studying present and future transit developments in Massachusetts. The Association owns one of the last pieces of conventional street railway equipment to run in the City of Boston. This streetcar, Type 5 number 5706, was built by the J. G. Brill Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1924, and for 45 years thereafter carried millions about the city of Boston. The car was retired in 1959 and purchased by the Boston Street Railway Association.
