This book is the eighth in a series of publications by the Boston Street Railway Association on the public transportation system of Metropolitan Boston. The Association was founded in 1959 as a non-profit educational and historical organization with the specific intents of preserving transit history and studying present and future transit developments in Massachusetts. The Association owns one of the last pieces of conventional street railway equipment to run in the City of Boston. This streetcar, Type 5 number 5706, was built by the J. G. Brill Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1924, and for 45 years thereafter carried millions about the city of Boston. The car was retired in 1959 and purchased by the Boston Street Railway Association. Funds from the sale of this and earlier publications are used to restore this car, which is located at the Branford Trolley Museum in Connecticut, as well as to generate revenue for further publications.
