PROLOGUE

It has been one hundred years since the transcontinental rails bound the continent. In an age when we can cross the continent in less than four hours, it is difficult to imagine what the four week crossing by train and stage coach must have been like in 1857. And perhaps it is hard to imagine the excitement created a hundred years ago when the wedding of the rails reduced that time to four days.

In 1869, the ceremony at Promontory Point was modest in terms of the occasion. The real celebration, like the rails, was a transcontinental affair. In 1969, Promontory Point is having the grand, gala, summer long celebration befitting the importance of the Centennial with the nation modestly joining in.

Transcontinental Rails does- not attempt a study in retrospect, but the re-creation of geography of the period and manner in which the principals perceived their environment and their role in the building of the transcontinental rails. There are times when the testimony of those involved is not currently considered historically accurate, but it is quoted nonetheless because it represents their perception of their milieu.

If you, gentle reader, can sense the terror of the beetling granite crags of the high Sierras and the sheer monotony of the endless plains of Nebraska, and feel some of the bone grinding fatigue of railroading, this little book will have achieved its goal.
