It had been the intention to describe all the tram routes in North London in this volume of "Trams in London" but, due to the large number of routes which worked beyond the boundary of the old style London County Council, it soon became obvious that the lines in the outer areas, which were once in Middlesex, should be the subject of a further volume. Therefore, the reader will see that all the routes and services which operated within the LCC area - save one - will be shown in this book.
As with the previous book, all the services, except for those which used the Kingsway Subway, had been replaced by trolleybuses by 1940. The last outposts of tramways north of the Thames were operated by services 31, 33 and 35.
Thanks are due to the many photographers who took the trouble to record the views seen here, for without their interest and enthusiasm, there would not be any photographs to look at! These views also give an insight into the many and great changes made to the areas through which the trams ran.
Some of the tramcars shown in this survey were not scrapped when their routes were abandoned but were taken to the South London depots still operating trams and from which the cars worked for many more years until finally replaced by buses in 1950-52.
Some of the profits from the sale of this booklet will go towards sustaining the funds of the London County Council Tramways Trust in order that they may continue to undertake restoration work on London tramcars that have been preserved, and purchased by, or presented to the Trust.
The final volume, "Trams in Outer North London" will describe the remainder of routes and services, which once went towards making the London tramway system one of the greatest, in both size and volume of traffic, if not the greatest-in the world at that time.
