In this new book the author has drawn together 300 photographs to tell the story of the origin, development, and the ultimate demise of steam and motor tramps as they were succeeded by the modern bulk carrier.
Originating in British shipyards in the latter half of the nineteenth century, the deep-sea tramp steamer grew in size and efficiency such that it quickly replaced the sailing ship for carrying bulk commodities around the world.The ownership and building of tramp ships became slowly internationalised, although Britain remained pre-eminent in both up to the Second World War. By providing economic and reliable transportation for the vast quantities of materials generated by mining, quarrying, agriculture, forestry and manufacturing, the tramp ship was an important instrument of globalisation, helping to create today's industrial economy.
As well as the details of the vessels themselves, the book covers ownership, building, financing, and crewing tramp ships. Sometimes unrealistically romanticized, and equally often unfairly vilified, the tramp ship was a vital part of world trade for some 150 years. This book is a fitting tribute to these hard working ships.
