FORWARD
Any summer day in the early part of the 20th century and into the beginning of the 1930's you would see long lines of people at the Northwestern Pacific Railroad's ticket windows in the north end of San Francisco's famed Ferry Building. The hustle and bustle would start as early as 7:00 am and continue until 8:45 am as vacationers, weekend travelers or day excursionists jammed the windows buying tickets for the vacationland along the Russian River. "Roundtrip for myself and three kids under 12, to Monte Rio on the broad gauge and return on the narrow gauge with a stopover at Tomales to see my Aunt Martha," one would exclaim; "two roundtrips to Rio Nido with a two week limit" another would say; "give me one single to Guernewood Park," and on and on with the ticket clerks frantically trying to take care of everyone before boat time. Then precisely at 7:45 am the big sliding door would open with a mad scramble to board the ferry boat to Sausalito where you climbed aboard the steam trains. The gate keeper would call, "All aboard for Point Reyes, Tomales, Occidental, Camp Meeker, Monte Rio, Duncan Mills and Cazadero, narrow gauge train Number 8." In the space of three minutes the surge was over, and the ferry, with splash and foam from its massive paddle wheels, was on its way. Very quickly more passengers would arrive at the Ferry Building, and then at 8:45 am the scene was repeated, but this time the station caller would cry "Boat now leaving connects with broad gauge train Number 222 for San Rafael, Petaluma, Santa Rosa, Hilton, Rio Nido, Guerneville, Monte Rio and Duncan Mills and other Russian River points." On Sundays and holidays the crush of passengers was even greater, for a special broad gauge excursion train departed with the ferry connection leaving San Francisco at 7:15 am. The "iron horse" was king and the swaying wooden open platform cars were a thrill to ride as the thoughts of fun and vacation, or a day amongst the redwoods or sunning on the beach were uppermost in the minds of the thousands who rode the trains to the Russian River.
Two lines ran to the Russian River. After the ferry connection at Sausalito, the narrow guage ( 3 feet) turned to the left at San Anselmo in Marin County and proceeded through a wooded area to Point Reyes, thence along Tomales Bay, inland through agricultural country and into the redwood forests just before Occidental. Continuing northward, the slim gauge came upon the Russian River at Monte Rio, went along the south bank and across the river at Duncan Mills, then along Austin Creek to Cazadero.
