The railways as we know them today have been with us for about a century and a half. Their rapid expansion in the 19th century brought about a revolution in travel and transport. Passenger trains enabled ordinary people to travel widely for the first time. Freight trains accelerated the Industrial Revolution, distributing vital raw materials to factories and manufactured goods in bulk from them.
Until the 1950s practically all trains were hauled by steam locomotives, magnificent machines that pounded along the 'iron road', snorting and belching smoke and steam like mechanical monsters. But the days of steam locomotion were numbered. Magnificent and lovable though they were, steam locomotives were terribly inefficient and dirty. Gradually they all but disappeared from the scene.
