FOR A SICK RAILROAD, A DOCTOR
THE most notable fact about the Chicago & North Western Railway is not that it operated the first locomotive into Chicago (the Pioneer in 1848) or employed the world's most famous railroad heroine (Kate Shelley) or owns the largest freight yard in the nation (Proviso) or sponsors the second biggest rail suburban service west of New York. It is the melancholy fact that North Western is the sickest big railroad (7873 miles and operating revenues of 198.7 million dollars* last year) in the U. S. Its poor financial performance-preferred dividends not earned last year and no dividends paid on common stock since 1950 - stems from such indices of efficiency as these:
All class 1 roadsC&NW

Transportation ratio37.344.9
Operating ratio75.784.7
