A WORLD without trains! That is hard for you to believe. Yet less than one hundred and fifty years ago there were no steam trains.
England was the first country to have a steam locomotive that would really work well. Many men worked on the idea.
James Watt was one of these men. He found out that steam has power. He watched his mother's teakettle lid jump up and down as the water boiled.
Watt put steam to work by making a steam engine. He was not the first man to make such an engine. But his engine was the first really good one. It was used in the coal mines for pumping out water.
These first steam engines had no wheels. They could not run along the road. They had to stay in one place. What was wanted was an engine that could move along the road and haul coal cars.
