DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
This multivolume work presents a view of the history of American railroads in the nineteenth century from a different perspective. The maturation of the railroad is traced through an exposition of the railroad technology that was developed and applied during the period. Throughout the nineteenth century, a symbiotic relationship existed between railroading and technology-each dependent upon the state and progress of the other to a large degree. A great deal of new technology was created for the railroad, and the railroad, in turn, applied new technology as it became available. Four volumes, covering locomotives, cars, track, structures, bridges and tunnels, and signals will comprise the set.
This volume is devoted to the locomotives of nineteenth-century American railroads. A brief, general description of the American steam locomotive is provided to explain the general structure and fundamentals of operation of locomotives and a glossary defines some of the specialized terms. Then, locomotive design and application through three stages-infancy (1830-50), adolescence (1850-75), and maturity (1875-1900)--is covered.
The earliest locomotives were very unsophisticated, yet they were functional and fulfilled their design mission. Their shortcomings were recognized quickly and several important inventions were developed to overcome their flaws. By mid-century, the American locomotive had evolved to a fairly standard outline and further development involved increases in scale and division between machines built for power (for freight service) and those built for speed (for passenger trains). The last quarter of the century saw the application of compounding, a steam utilization technique that was much more efficient. Also during this period, several designs were produced for dedicated applications, such as geared locomotives for forest service and small, but powerful, machines for industrial applications. The last few decades of the century saw variants that were introduced by individuals who were more skilled at promotion than invention.
This volume of the history of the American railroad is accompanied by almost 150 illustrations and accurate drawings of the equipment and appliances, many of which have not been published before outside of old technical journals. It also includes interesting and pertinent anecdotal information. It explains the technology in easily understood terms, free from jargon for the most part. This has resulted in an easily understood presentation and clarification of very technical subjects as well as an enjoyable read.
