Some collect stamps or coins, some play golf, some run marathons (have you ever seen a marathon runner smiling?) and some sit on the couch exercising with the TV remote. One of my hobbies is chasing trains. No, I don't bite their wheels when I catch them. I take their picture. And this book, written just for your enjoyment, shows some of the pictures I have taken around this great country of ours. There is no great plot, and it won't ruin the book if you turn and read the last page first.

I imagine most of the readers of this page are also rail-fans and/or train photographers. Have you ever tried to explain your hobby to your non-railfan friends or family? "Tomorrow I'm going to get up before dawn, drive a hundred or so miles, sit by the railroad tracks, and wait for a train to come past." The response, typically with a rolling of the eyes is, "You're going to do what?" It never works trying to explain why we like our hobby. But have you ever asked a golfer to explain why he gets up early to hit a ball with a stick into a gopher hole out in the middle of a cow pasture, and then take it out and hit it again into another gopher hole? We do have some pretty strange hobbies that can be hard to explain.

Once, while staying at the Station Inn in Cresson, Pennsylvania, a photographer went trackside for every train, but only took a photo of a car now and then - strange. When asked, he indicated his goal was to get a photo of every car reporting mark on the rails (i.e. the reporting mark for a car owned by the CSX railroad is CSXT). Another fellow I ran into was trying to get a photo of every engine number of the Chicago & North Western. He went to the Rochelle, Illinois, diamond day after day to try to get every engine, before the buyout by Union Pacific. I have found most of my photo locations by trying to duplicate good shots I've seen in various railroad magazines, information from friends, and just driving close to a set of railroad tracks. This book is not a "how to" for rail photography, but more of a "here are some of my favorite locations" for taking train photos.
