About two years ago the Norfolk & Western initiated the development of a coal-burning switching locomotive which would have many of the advantages claimed for other types of switchers, such as high availability, flexibility, reliability and low, overall operating costs.
Dual Type Locomotives for the New York Central - Modified "Mohawk" design used in both passenger and freight service - Light weight parts and improved balancing are important features.
A new and important trend in locomotive design is signified by the installation on the New York Central late in 1940, of 25 Alco-built locomotives of the Mohawk 4-8-2 type, constructed and equipped to operate at 80 mph in both passenger and heavy freight service. This is the first time the New York Central has ever operated dual purpose locomotives which are suitable for both classes of service. Ten other Alco-built Mohawks, also included in this order, were designed primarily for fast freight service.
New York Central Buys 50 4-8-2 Type Locomotives - Half of this group of freight locomotives are completely fitted for main-line passenger service - Lightweight parts and improved balancing are important features.
The New York Central is now placing in service, as delivered, 50 locomotives of the 4-8-2 type. Twenty-five of these units are completely equipped for passenger and freight service while the remainder are fitted for freight service only. The passenger and freight locomotives are known as the railroad Class L-3a and were built by the American Locomotive Company. The freight locomotives are known as the L-3b Class and 10 of these were built by the same builder, while the remaining 15 freight locomotives were built by the Lima Locomotive Works.
Vertical Wheel Hand Brake .
The Champion Brake Corporation has developed a vertical wheel hand brake, called the Micro-Matic safety hand brake, which is operated entirely by the hand wheel. It is being distributed by the Standard Car Sales Company, Inc., Chicago.
New York Central All-Round Road Locomotives - Built by Lima, Primarily for freight service, these 4-8-2 type have 72 in. drivers and develop 59,900 lb. tractive force - Drawbar horsepower estimated at about 4,300 at 60 mph - Entire group has averaged over 10,000 miles per month since delivery. .
In a road test one of the L-3 locomotives developed a maximum indicated horsepower of 5,260 and a maximum drawbar horsepower of 4,120 at 58 mph. The L-4's have not been tested, but it is estimated that they will develop a maximum of 5,400 indicated horsepower, and of just under 4,300 drawbar horsepower at 60 mph.
4-8-4 Type Locomotives Built by Baldwin.
Among the notable types of steam locomotives developed during the past few years, the 4-8-4 is conspicuous because of its all-round usefulness as a fast freight and heavy passenger engine. With four pairs of driving wheels, high starting tractive force can be developed; the four-wheeled leading truck insures safe guiding at high speeds, while the four-wheeled trailing truck allows the boiler to be of greater potential horsepower capacity than would be possible in a locomotive of the Mountain (4-8-2) type caring the same weight of driving wheels. The 4-8-4 promises to become quite as successful and "all-round service" locomotive as was the 4-4-0 (American) type many years ago.
