INTRODUCTION:
From the start, the Train Master diesel locomotive was a curious creation. Coming from the smallest of the serious diesel locomotive builders, it was the most powerful single-engine road-switcher unit in the diesel-electric locomotive market. But it was more than that. Its builder, Fairbanks, Morse & Co., intended it to be a universal workhorse, one that, through the use of a skillful advertising campaign, promised to be all things to all railroads.
Although this was a tall order for a new model, the FM Train Master lived up to its billing, but on a much smaller scale than that for which its designers had hoped
