Represented here are nearly five years of a unique fraternal writing effort, an effort shared among thirteen prominent members of the Western Writers of America who each wrote about a special episode in the history of the Western railroads.
The tales they tell are not only of the great trunk lines that built the West, but also of the smaller railroads, all great adventures in the taming of the West.
Here is the story of the political and geographical machinations that led to the wedding of the Union Pacific and Central Pacific lines; the enormous tragedies that plagued the railroads; the story of the railroaders immense struggle against contract deadlines, hostile Indians, competing tracklayers, train robbers. And the strange tale of the Bonanza Line in Oregon, an oddity built on rails of wood covered by rawhide.
Here too are over a hundred rare and unusual photographs, dramatic records of man's conquest of an untamed wilderness, and of the two thin strips of steel stretched across a continent they called Trails Of The Iron Horse.
