NARROW-GAUGE RAILROADING in southwestern Colorado conjures up visions of little coal-burning steam engines climbing over high mountain passes... with names like Marshall, Lizard Head, Cerro Summit, Cumbres and Dallas Divide... and flanges squealing around corkscrew curves in rocky canons... as the wooden cars are hauled to such mystical mining camps as Silverton, Red Mountain, Eureka, Animas Forks, Ouray, Telluride, Ophir and Rico.
But wait! There were other fascinating narrow-gauge routes that reached equally magical mining camps deep in the heart of the silver San Juans. And these narrow-gauge lines were every bit as important to these "other" routes as the ones that served the mining camps listed above.
For unknown reasons, the stories of the Creede and Lake City branches of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad have been largely ignored by railfans and Western history buffs. Perhaps the remoteness of the region has contributed to this oversight.
In any case, the 1988 issue of Trails Among the Columbine will help dispell the strange enigma of these little lines as well as of the eastern San Juan region which they helped develop.
