What this continuing series presents is lavish in both depth and scope. Unlike typical books about Colorado and its dramatic past, Sundance Publications and the writers who produced it have carefully chosen photographs, maps and other illustrations to weave the total content into a precise and detailed story  like a beautifully embellished tapestry  a tapestry with a richness of feeling, providing one with a truly sumptuous visual experience.
Colorado is unique among the mountain regions of the American West. Other Western states have single mountain ranges, which when surpassed, are left behind. However, the Colorado Rockies consist of many complicated ranges, extending from east to west for over 300 miles. After passing through the eastern foothills  which abruptly rise up from the Great Plains  one dramatically ascends the Front Range to cross the great Continental Divide. From the top of the Divide one can behold mountain range upon mountain range to the west  as far as the eye can see. This immense complexity of mountain ranges includes 52 peaks with an elevation of 14,000 feet or more, as well as hundreds which rise to over 12,000 feet. This region of rugged grandeur is bisected or interposed by countless valleys, deep canons and picturesque parklands.
With today's modern highways, it is relatively easy to traverse this jumbled-and-abstruse region, and it is truly difficult to imagine how the early prospectors found their way through this complex-and-inhibiting country. And even after they discovered promising "color" in the streams and among the rocky crags, it is even more incomprehensible
