'The story you are about to read is not just another train thriller," warns Clarence Champlin, Chief Special Agent-System, Southern Pacific Company, in the foreword to this real-life mystery story. The SP has a standing offer of a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case of the "Tragic Train," unsolved for nearly 40 years.
When the streamliner "City of San Francisco" made its inaugural run January 2, 1938, the pride of the SP was billed as the "largest, fastest, most beautiful, powerful and luxurious streamliner ever designed." It also moved 171 travelers from Chicago to San Francisco in a swift 391/4 hours. Everything about the train was special: her extra-long power units stretched 210 feet; her six giant engines generated an astonishing 5400 horsepower; her length, with 17 coaches instead of the usual 11, was just short of a quarter-mile.
Her destiny was just as spectacular: on August 12, 1939 near Harney, Nev., this $2,000,000 streamliner was wrecked in an act of sabotage by person or persons unknown.
Author DeNevi received special permission and the full cooperation of the Southern Pacific in recounting the story of the "City of San Francisco." He reviewed the SP's entire collection of evidence and records to tell here, for the first time publicly, the story of the train's construction, derailment and the subsequent manhunt. "Everyone from the most serious railroad buff to the general mystery fan will appreciate what SP railroad detectives endured during the search years," says SP's Champlin, "and perhaps the story will bring forth some new evidence."
In any event, the reader is in for an absorbing session as he follows the story from drawing board to the time he climbs aboard the "City of San Francisco" for its historic last run.
