For those reading the Traction Yearbook for the first time, Ed like to explain the purpose of the book. The Traction Yearbook details, in words and photos, the world's traction events for an approximate one-year period. Although the book is dated 1983. the material starts in late 1981 and continues through early 1983. It takes us approximately seven to nine months after a calendar year's end to collate the material necessary to prepare and write the articles, and another three to four to have the book typeset and printed. Thus, although we would like to produce the book more closely to the time it actually covers, this would be rather difficult in view of the amount of work involved. However, we have recently installed a computer system to aid in writing Traction Yearbook and to maintain our mailing list. With this equipment. we hope to be able to release the book in September or October of each year. If the equipment proves successful and is able to allow us to produce the book at at more rapidly, consideration will also be given to issuing Traction Yearbook twice a year. This step, however, would be at least a few years down the road. Traction Yearbook '83 is later than usual this year due to the amount of time necessary to set up the computer system, but, it should allow us to deliver a more timely product in the future.
Traction Yearbook emphasizes light rail transit, with secondary coverage on trolleybus. metro and heavy rail systems. Some older, historical material will be presented. but the main thrust of this book is on current events.
This editor's page contains, as you will note, a potpourri of general information. Thus, from paragraph to paragraph. a variety of information will be presented. These are the items which are of a miscellaneous nature and would not be appropriate elsewhere.
Due to many requests from our readers, we will again be accepting reader's ads. The first ads will appear in Traction Yearbook '84. A Reader's Ad Order Form is included at the rear of this book. The closing date for all ads is August 31st, 1984. Any ads received after that date will be returned.
Also at the rear of this book. you'll find the Traction Yearbook '83 Comments Sheet. Were happy to note that over 20% of our Traction Yearbook '82 readers returned those Comments Sheets to us: many included excellent ideas and suggestions for future editions. We look forward to receiving these sheets. and, as a matter of record, 55% rated Traction Yearbook '82 "excellent," 38% considered it "very good," 6% thought the book to be "good," and only one person each rated the book "fair and "didn't like it." We are quite proud of these figures and hope to improve on them with each succeeding issue.
