On behalf of all involved in producing Traction Yearbook '82, I would like to extend my sincere thanks for your support. The response to and success of Traction Yearbook '81 has been nothing short of phenomenonal, and we hope that TY '82 will exceed your expectations.
The purpose of the Traction Yearbook is to detail, in words and photographs, the annual worldwide traction happenings for an approximate one year period. Thus, this edition is an insight into what has happened in the traction world during 1981, although we have added some items that occurred late in 1980 or early in 1982. Our news articles are generally closed around March of the date of publication, allowing a continuity in the Yearbook from year to year. Since this book is intended to present "current history," no older historical material will be included, except where it is necessary for introductory purposes to current articles. We will continue to present, however, a limited number of older photographs to allow comparisons between what was and what is happening at the current time. The concentration and main thrust of the Traction Yearbook will be on light rail transit, with secondary coverage in the trolleybus and metro/rapid transit areas. I feel that excellent historical articles are readily found in many other publications, while not enough is available that details what is happening at present.
It is obvious there is a high concentration of foreign material in the Traction Yearbook. This publication is worldwide in scope, and although we are experiencing a light rail renaissance in North America, it is. as yet. very limited and we would be unable to find enough material or photographs of a domestic nature, to present each year, without serious repitition. I also believe that most devotees of electric traction are farsighted enough to want to increase their knowledge of what is occurring in other areas of the world. With the purchase of foreign electric and other transit vehicles by American transit properties, the gap between East and West with regards to transit equipment is slowly closing. It is ironic that thirty years ago we exported our PCC technology, while now we are importing the latest in transit vehicle developments from the nations we once helped.
Past subscribers have already noticed major changes in the contents and format of this year's Traction Yearbook. Some were made for economic reasons, others for esthetic and practical purposes. The basic format of future Yearbooks will remain the same as this edition, and the Traction Yearbook will be published on an annual basis.
