In 1953, when Thieme started his color work, Virginia was basically served by six trunk railroads, the Norfolk & Western, the Virginian, the Chesapeake & Ohio, the Seaboard Air Line, the Atlantic Coast Line, and the Southern, and one significant bridge road, the Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac. To be sure, the Baltimore & Ohio entered the state at Potomac Yard, Alexandria, and also through its Shenandoah Valley line from Harpers Ferry to Winchester, and the Pennsylvania entered Potomac Yard as well, and also had a line down the Eastern Shore of Virginia to Cape Charles, from whence it operated a car float operation over to Little Creek. And, yes, the Louisville & Nashville and Clinchfield reached their tentacles into the coalfields of far southwestern Virginia. But the latter four lines were minor presences and in any event, they were no longer operating steam in Virginia.
