PREFACE
Well in Scranton lust a short distance from the present Steamtown site until I was twenty one. I explored all the places and railroads that Ed Miller has so well documented although I was too young to record them on color film. A good deal of my early childhood was "wasted" hanging over the railing of the Spruce Street bridge watching the Lackawanna or waiting at the south end of the Laurel Line tunnel for a car to roar out. Before going oft to Penn State to start a career in engineering I worked as a draftsman at a plant near the end of Bridge 60 and witnessed the declining steam years. For me to do this book was really a case of reliving my youthful years thinking then that I was the only rail fan in the whole world. Although Ed Miller and I have only met in person about eight limes we have corresponded extensively for over thirty years. He has always been most willing to share his knowledge and extensive collection with me and others doing writing and research. The extent of his knowledge and record keeping is truly amazing. As an example some years back I was attempting to make a set of drawings of Laurel Line freight motor 401 for publication in a model railroad magazine. A good amount of photographic material was on hand but I needed some basic measurements of the locomotive. First thought was to write to Ed on the hope he had some company documents with dimensions. A week later back comes a letter containing four pages of dimensions of the 401 he had measured and recorded years ago....including the internal arrangement, There was another rail fan out there and he was only a few miles away.
