Canada, with an area of almost four million square miles, is the second largest country in the world, exceeded only by Russia. In so vast a land, transportation has always been the key to its development and wellbeing. The railways of Canada have been built into a vast system with a current total mileage of over 33,000 miles. The total mileage is divided between about two dozen railways, all but two being regional and short lines. Canadian National Railways accounts for some 20,400 miles; the Canadian Pacific Railway accounts for some 12,500 miles. CP and CN provide transcontinental freight services while Via Rail Canada, a federal Crown Corporation, operates passenger services. In 1969, the time of some views in this book, Canadian railways operated a total of 43,613 miles of track and owned 3,316 locomotives, 2,942 passenger cars, and 188,268 freight cars. This book provides sample views across the country, generally arranged geographically from east to west. The images were selected to represent the scope of Matt's coverage of individual railways in time and geographic location.
