Preface
This is the story of a short, relatively unknown, narrow gauge railway built in a remote area of southwest England. It was built by the company it was to serve, for its own purposes and not, as was usual in those days, by a new company especially floated for the purpose and financed with public money. It lasted nearly forty five years and was then swept away by a standard gauge extension line, which finally bridged a gap in the railway system that had been under discussion in various formats for nearly one hundred years.
This little railway, from Great Torrington to the Marland Brick & Clay Company's works at Peters Marland, did not play a major part in the development of the railway network in Great Britain, nor did it have a lasting effect on local trade and industry. That is not to say that it was an insignificant and unimportant development in the story of railway building and the railway mania of the mid-nineteenth century. It was in fact an important stage in the development of the worldwide work of its engineer John Barraclough Fell and was a full-size practical demonstration of many of his patented ideas.
