Ontario between the Humber and Don Rivers was called Toronto by the Indians, which means \"place of meeting.\" The area was later called York, but on March 6, 1834 it was incorporated as a city and renamed Toronto. It is the largest city in Canada and the provincial capital of Ontario with the greater Toronto area having a population of 5,555,912 in the 2006 census. Toronto's first public transit service was the Williams Omnibus Bus Line using horse drawn stage coaches to carry passengers on Yonge Street from Lawrence Market (Front Street) to the Village of Yorkville (between Bloor Street and Yorkville Avenue) in 1849. On March 26, 1861 the Toronto Street Railway received a 30 year franchise to build, operate, and maintain a street railway. The franchise required that the track gauge would accommodate wagons. Horse car was step rail. Horse cars, equipped with iron wheels with flanges on the inside, ran on the outer or upper step of the rail. Wagon wheels were wooden with an iron tire. Wagons would use the inner, or lower step of the rail. The upper step of the rail guided the wagons on the track. To accommodate the wagons the track gauge had to be 4 feet, 10 7\/8inches. This gave wagons a stable roadbed, as the streets were not paved. That continued and today is still the track gauge for Toronto's trolley cars. In 1861, the first year of operation, the horse drawn street railway had 6 miles of track, 11 cars, 70 horses, and carried 2,000 passengers a day. By 1891 the system had 68 miles of track, 361 vehicles, 100 sleighs, 1,372 horses, and carried 55,000 riders a day. The city took over the expired franchise of the Toronto Street Railway. Toronto City Council granted a 30 year franchise to the new Toronto Railway Company which took over operations on September 1, 1891. The first electric trolley car was operated on Church Street on August 15, 1892. When the company refused to extend its one fare service beyond city limits, the city under the Toronto Civic Railway began in 1911 to construct new lines. On January 1, 1920 Toronto citizens voted to take over the private company.
